The mHealth (short for Mobile Health) o Mobile Health, which includes all those companies dedicated to the development of mobile technology to manage people's health and wellbeing. This technology can be used by both healthcare employees and patients to collect, store and analyse information related to their health.
Although the MHealth sector is a relatively new, emerging sector with great potential for growth in the coming years, there are already a number of companies that have already achieved high revenue volumes and have become leaders in the mHealth market: two of them are Stryker and Allscripts.
MHealth: STRYKER
Stryker Corporation is a multinational company headquartered in Kalamazoo, Michigan and primarily engaged in the development, manufacture and distribution of medical devices. Its business is divided into three business segments:
- Orthopaedics: development and manufacture of implants for joint replacement, trauma and limb treatments, reconstructive technology etc.
- MegSurg (from Medical&Surgical (medical and surgical): surgical equipment, navigation systems for surgeries, patient transport and furniture, etc.
- Neurotechnology: manufacture of equipment for cranial, vertebral and neurovascular treatment.
Today it operates in more than 100 countries around the world through subsidiaries and affiliates and is the leading supplier of mobile technology and medical devices in the United States. In FY2017, it had revenues of $12.4 billion, operating income of $2.06 billion and has more than 33,000 employees worldwide. It is currently listed on the S&P 500 and has a market capitalisation of $62.405 billion.
In terms of investment activity, Stryker has made 47 investments to date. acquisitions. The most recent, announced on 4 November 2019, was the acquisition for a price of $ 4B from Wright Medical Group The company is dedicated to offering both biological products and surgical solutions for the upper and lower extremities.
MHealth: ALLSCRIPTS
Another of the most powerful companies in the mHealth sector is Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, Inc. It is also a US multinational headquartered in Chicago, Illinois and listed on NASDAQ, with a market value of $1.14 billion. In the last financial year it had revenues of $1.8 billion, an operating margin of $59.8 million and has more than 7,600 employees worldwide.
Allscripts' activity is more focused on technological development for the management and optimisation of healthcare services: development of applications and software for patient care, electronic solutions for the coordination and monitoring of patient loyalty, etc. It also offers financial and data analysis services.
On the investment side, Allscripts has acquired 15 companies. Most recently, it acquired ZappRX in June 2019, a digital platform that enables patients, doctors and pharmacists to work together to improve patient access to treatment and deliver medicines faster.
