Growing investment in financial technologies (FINTECH)

Investment in financial technologies (FinTech) by venture capital and venture capital has increased steadily since 2008 and has eclipsed $ 9 B. 2013 is shaping up to be an exceptional year for FinTech surpassing the high levels seen in 2012.

Below is the FinTech investment picture since 2008. As shown below, $ 9.03B has been invested in over 1,314 deals in that time period. And based on the 2013 rate through June, it looks like 2013 will set a new all-time high for FinTech investment.

Fintech: technology for financial problem solving 

The range is very wide:

  • Capital Markets Technology - Companies that provide tools and platforms to facilitate the buying and selling of financial securities for professional investors.
  • Payments - Companies offering technologies to facilitate payments processing, including reducing processing costs, enabling digital currencies as a viable method of payment and systems for customers to make payments via their mobile phone.
  • Data analysis - Companies that leverage big data for financial matters, such as risk management, fraud detection and credit monitoring.
  • Banking and Corporate Finance - Companies that use technologies to complement or innovate corporate financial practices such as loan origination, mobile banking and accounting for both corporate and traditional banking.
  • Personal Financial Management - Companies that help people manage a wide variety of finances, including stock portfolios, personal budgets and taxes through technology. In Spain there are some examples of leading startups such as Fintonic, unience and Impok.
