What M&A deals are you seeing in the beverage sector?
Wineries most active sector

In the last three months, we have detected operations in the winery sector with the aim of growing internationally. As many foreign companies have decided to invest in Spain as Spanish companies have invested abroad. In addition, a venture capital fund,  Qualitas Equity Partners has also seen an opportunity in the food sector and has invested in Vintae. This winery is dedicated to the production and marketing of wines with designation of origin. The company has its base of operations in La Rioja, where it owns a winery (Bodega Clássica).

As an example of a company that is growing abroad, the Jerez-based bodega González Byass has acquired a majority stake in the Chilean winery Veramonte, which allows it to strengthen the activity of its distribution company in the United States, Gonzalez Byass USA, expanding its portfolio with Veramonte brands. Gonzalez Byass has also recently acquired the Galician winery Pazos de Lusco.

In the beer sector, Mahou, after growing in Spain, is looking to grow abroad.

"If we want to reach an export weight of 20% of total turnover in 2018, we will also have to grow inorganically," said Alberto Rodríguez Toquero in July. The company has 187 M in cash and "no debt".

Their current target markets include the US, where they already control 20% of the market, and India.

In Spain, in April Mahou bought Cremadis, an exclusive distributor of Mahou beers, water from the Nestle-Waters group, Pernod Ricard and Marcilla coffees, in Valencia. Also in the same month it bought the 40% of Nómada Brewing, a Spanish craft beer company.

In the water sector

There has been a new merger between inter-suppliers. Bebidas Naturales, Importaco's bottled water subsidiary, has bought three bottling plants from Font Agudes.

Importaco is a food group specialising in nuts, snacks and mineral water. With this operation, the company will be able to grow in mineral water, expanding its product offering, as it has six brands with market penetration.

Bebidas Naturales, Importaco's water subsidiary, will increase its business volume to more than 600 million litres of bottled water per year, which places the group in third position in mineral waters in Spain.
