LIFE+ European support for the environment and the climate
The LIFE Programme is the European Union's financial instrument dedicated to the environment. Its general objective is to contribute to the development of relevant EU environment and climate strategies and plans.

 

Beneficiaries

Public bodies, Private commercial organisations, Private non-commercial organisations, including NGOs.

Type of aid

In general, 60% of the eligible costs.

Exceptions:

75% of the eligible costs for projects funded under the sub-programme Environment in relation to the priority area Nature and Biodiversity which concern priority habitats or species of the Birds and Habitats Directives.

100% of the eligible costs in the case of capacity building projects.

Type of projects to be financed:

Pilot projectswhich apply a technique or method that has not been applied or tested before, or anywhere, that offers potential environmental or climatic benefits compared to current best practice

Demonstration projects test methodologies or approaches that are new or unknown in the specific project context.

Best practice projectsprojects that apply state-of-the-art, cost-effective and appropriate techniques, methods and approaches, taking into account the specific context of the project.

Integrated projectsprojects implementing on a large territorial scale, in particular at regional, national or transnational level, environmental and climate plans or strategies required by specific Union environmental or climate legislation, or developed by Member State authorities.

Technical assistance projectsprojects providing financial support to help applicants prepare integrated projects and, in particular, to ensure that these projects meet the requirements.

Capacity building projectsprojects providing financial support for activities necessary to develop the capacity of Member States, including national or regional contact points, which enable Member States to participate more effectively in the LIFE Programme.

Information projectsThe Commission's Environment and Climate Action sub-programmes will also be involved in the implementation, awareness-raising and dissemination of information in the areas of the Environment and Climate Action sub-programmes.

Recyship, a successful project that received 3.5 million euros for Life

Recyship is the pilot project for the decontamination and dismantling of end-of-life ships, the aim of which is to address the problems of occupational safety, health and environmental issues during the recycling of ships at the end of their life cycle. Recyship was led in 2012 by Reciclauto Navarra S.L. and also involved Prysma, Navalia, Tecnalia and Fwd. You can see detailed information about the project in this link.
