Many say that print media is dead, yet in the last year we have seen acquisitions in the sector. This month we learned that the Lara family, owner of the Prisa group, bought a stake in the Cataluña newspaper and last year Heraldo de Aragón bought 20 minutos and is now considering buying 5 días. These media offer both online and print services, maybe it is a good tactic to buy cheap and boost the digital part.
The Lara family buys the 5,75% of the newspaper of Catalonia
The family of the group's founder Planet bought this month a 5,75% of ‘El Periódico de Catalunya‘ después de que este redujera su deuda.
In addition to the owners of Planeta, new investors have entered El Periódico, the owner of Zeta, Antonio Asensio, and the Mexican businessman Domingo Muguira. Between them, the three new shareholders account for 14.37 per cent of the newspaper's capital, while the other 85 per cent remains in the hands of Grupo Zeta itself, the parent company of the newspaper's publisher.
Following the arrival of the new investors, the first changes to the board of directors were made a fortnight ago. As a result, the company is now chaired by Zeta Group and Marta Lara García, her company EPC 2015 Inversiones, Antonio Asensio and his real estate firm Arkan Nueva Europa, and Domingo Muguira Revuelta have joined the board. Also joining the board are Agustín Cordón, former general manager of Fira de Barcelona; Pedro Fontana García, who is also a director of Zeta; and Conrado Carnal, general manager of Grupo Zeta.
Heraldo de Aragón buys 20 minutos
Heraldo de Aragón bought the free newspaper 20 minutos in July 2015 from Schibsted Media Group.
This purchase was the first purchase outside the boundaries of Aragón for Heraldo, which is committed to combining the local with the national and the digital with the paper.
In this sense, the purchase of 20minutos perfectly combines investment in traditional and digital media. The paper edition of the free newspaper 20minutos, with a circulation of 343,776 copies per day, has an audience of 1,040,000 readers per day, making it the second largest print newspaper in Spain, behind only 'El País', according to EGM data. As for its digital edition, in the global media panel of April 2015, according to Comscore data, 20minutos is the second digital newspaper in Spanish, also only behind El País.
In addition, in September, Heraldo presented a non-binding offer for the purchase of the 5 días group, which the Prisa group wants to carry out as part of its debt refinancing strategy.
