Opportunity in the Baas sector
From 2010 onwards, when the mobility sector started to grow very rapidly, venture capital saw an opportunity in Baas companies. Kii backed by Fenox venture capital with $7.3M in October 2010, Kinvey financed by Atlas venture with $5M in 2012, and Firebase by Union Square Ventures and others with $5.6M in June 2013. In total, companies working in this activity have raised $ 152M in 36 transactions since 2010.
"These systems allow mobile application developers to connect and synchronise various cloud services in real time in a single cloud backend, allowing them to focus their resources on development rather than on infrastructure," says Diego Gutierrez from Abra Invest.
M&A in the Baas sector
There have only been 5 sales transactions since 2012. Perhaps the most important acquisition has been the acquisition of the cloud app platform Parse by Facebook $90M in April 2013.The company was backed by venture capital Ignition Partners.
In December 2013 Paypal acquired Stackmob, a Baas platform backed by Trinity Ventures and Baselina Ventures.
