Cellnex Telecom is a Spanish wireless telecommunications infrastructure and services company. Its activity is divided into four main areas: services for telecommunications infrastructures, audiovisual broadcasting networks, security and emergency network services and solutions for the intelligent management of urban infrastructures and services.
Cellnex has paid Indra 37.2 million euros for the 60% of the capital Metrocall, the company in charge of the design, development, management and operation of the Metro de Madrid mobile telephony network. Metrocall has signed contracts to manage services for Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange within the Madrid Metro.
The sale by Indrais part of the action plan announced by the company last July during the presentation of results. At that time, the company announced that, given the current economic crisis and the changes taking place in the market, it was going to review its costs and operations. As a result, they have disposed of the 60% stake in Metrocall because it is not a strategic asset for them.
With this acquisition, Cellnex strengthens the portfolio of telecommunications infrastructures it manages for transport networks and suburban environments, including connectivity services for the Milan Metro and the Brescia Metro, and communications networks for security and emergencies on line 9 of the Barcelona Metro and the Valencia Metro. Also in the AVE tunnels in Barcelona and on the Girona line.
Future of Cellnex
The acquisition is a significant transaction as it enriches and strengthens Cellnex's position in connectivity and metropolitan transport network coverage. Cellnex is in the midst of an expansion process. Last August, it closed a capital increase of 4,000 million euros to raise funds to finance new acquisitions telecoms infrastructure, at a time when telecoms are considering divesting from these networks to reduce debt.
