AgTech: leading companies in the sector

In this post we will return to the AgTech sector, which as we already know, is based on the introduction of biotechnology, blockchain and artificial intelligence in agriculture with the aim of increasing productivity, efficiency and profitability in the sector.

However, the AgTech concept is very broad and encompasses a wide variety of technologies applied to agriculture: the use of drones for crop cultivation and field monitoring; satellite photography and sensors; artificial intelligence for software analysis to help predict pests and diseases that affect the crop etc.

Although this is a relatively emerging and growing sector, there are some companies that have achieved high turnover and market leadership in a short period of time, such as Osram y Monsanto.

OSRAM

OSRAM Licht AG is a German multinational company engaged in the manufacture of lighting tools, such as LED lights, lasers and sensors, light management systems and all types of light bulbs. It is headquartered in Munich, Germany and is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

In the last financial year (2018) it had a turnover of USD 4.115 billion and employs approximately 27,400 people worldwide. In relation to AgTech, it manufactures energy-efficient lighting components and systems for greenhouses as well as for the domestic cultivation of fruit and vegetables.

OSRAM was acquired by AMS in December 2019 for a total of $5.07 billion.

Monsanto

Monsanto Company is another leading player in the AgTech sector, with a market value of $56.3 billion, a turnover of $20 billion and 25,500 employees globally.
