Major Spanish participation in H2020 2014
495 Spanish companies obtained funding in 2014 from H2020 to finance R&D&I projects, ranking third in the EU-28. In addition, Spanish companies lead the SME instrument programme.  

 


Return on investment h2020 Spain

Spanish entities invested around 290 million euros in R&D&I activities in 2014, thanks to the grant received by H2020.

495 companies out of the 2319 Spanish companies submitted received funding in h2020. By type of entity, companies lead the return on investment with 42% of the funding obtained, followed by universities (16%), technology centres (14%), public research centres (9.3%), research associations (7.8%) and public administrations (7.2%). The remainder is accounted for by associations (3.51 PTY1T).

By autonomous community, Madrid is in first position by return, with 29%, followed by Catalonia (27.2%) and the Basque Country (14.4%). Next is the Valencian Community (6.2%), Andalusia (4.9%), Galicia (4.2%), Castile and Leon (3.8%), Aragon (2.7%) and Navarre (2.4%). The rest do not exceed 1%.

In terms of returns by theme, the energy The top ranking (19.1%) is followed by Nanotechnology, advanced materials, advanced manufacturing and biotechnology (15.2%); innovation in SMEs and access to risk finance (12.9%); space (11.2%); food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime, inland water and bio-economic research (10.9%); health, demographic change and wellbeing (9.4%); health, demographic change and wellbeing (9.4%); food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime, inland water and bio-economic research (10,9%); health, demographic change and well-being (9,4%); information and communication technologies (8,9%); smart, green and integrated transport (7,9%).

H2020 SME instrument is Spain

According to provisional data from the 2014 calls for proposals, provided by the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME), the body managing the instrument, Spain is the leading country in terms of the number of beneficiary SMEs in both Phase 1 and Phase 2.

In the first phase, the cumulative data from the three calls in 2014 place Spain in first position, with 129 companies participating out of 655, ahead of Italy (108), the United Kingdom (81) and Germany (49).

 In the second phase, the data from the two 2014 calls for proposals place Spain and the United Kingdom first with 25 companies each, ahead of Germany and the Netherlands with 17. These 25 Spanish SMEs have received 26.4 million euros (12.36% of return taking the EU-28 as a reference), a figure that places Spain as the third country that has obtained the most funds, only behind the United Kingdom (31.55 million) and the Netherlands (27.6 million).
