download (1)COSME with a budget of €2.3 billion to run between 2014 and 2020 is the EU's Competitiveness of Enterprises and SMEs programme that helps entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises to start up, access finance and internationalise, as well as supporting authorities to improve the business environment and facilitate economic growth in the European Union.

Cosme's objectives

- Improving SMEs' access to finance funding in the form of equity and debt through financial intermediaries.
- Improving market access for businesses. The Enterprise Europe Network will provide support services to facilitate business expansion inside and outside the European Union and fund international industrial cooperation to close the gap between the EU and its main trading partners.
- Improve the framework conditions for the competitiveness and sustainability of enterprises, in particular SMEs, including in the tourism sector.
- Promoting entrepreneurship: The aim is to develop entrepreneurial skills and attitudes, especially among new entrepreneurs, young people and women.

Aid modalities

Within the aid provided by the programme are €21 billion in guarantees for SMEs and €4 billion of capital to help SMEs in the expansion phase, and in particular those with cross-border activities, to grow and expand. Around 500 companies are expected to receive capital, with an overall investment volume that could reach €4 billion, attracting funding additional investment through joint investment from public and private sources.
